Preventing acne

What is acne?

Acne is a skin disorder that results from active hormones on the sebaceous glands of the skin leads to clogged pores (creating whiteheads and blackheads) and then creates and outbreak of nodules or cysts which are commonly referred to as pimples.

Acne is commonly found on the skin of the following areas:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Chest
  • Shoulders
  • Back
  • Upper arms

What Causes Acne?

Despite what is said, acne is NOT caused by eating nuts, chocolates or drinking soda. Acne is caused by oil glands in thr skin that are overactive, as well as dead skin cells, an accumulation of oil and bacteria, which all lead to inflammation in pores. Individuals in their teens are more prone to getting acne due to the fact that during puberty, hormones become active which causes the oil glands to become stimulated. Due to the fact that the development of acne is parshly genetic, an individual with relatives who have had or still have acne, are more likely to develop acne than others.

Although preventing acne altogether is not proven yet, there are a few steps you can take in order to prevent severe and numerous breakouts:

  • If you are using skin products (make-up, lotions, etc.) try and find ones that don't clog pores, they are usually named under either "noncomedogenic" or "nonacnegenic".
  • If you get body acne (back, chest, arms, etc.) try and keep away from wearing from tight clothing that can rub against your body because this causes irritation on the skin which leads to body acne.
  • It is extremely essential to wash your skin, but also keep in mind that washing your skin too much causes damage by irritating acne that already exists on the skin and can also cause your skin to over dry.
  • There are a large variety of hair products that can cause your acne to become worse due to the fact that they contain oil. So if you do use styling gels or hair sprays, do your best to avoid the product from touching your face.
  • Exercising is essential for everyone and this can actually play a vital role in keeping your skin healthy, but also remember that sweat can clog your pores and can inflict your acne, so always remember to wash your face and body after exercising.

How can i treat Acne?

Many people find that OTC (Over the counter) products work best for them in clearing up their acne. Keeping in mind that everyone's skin is different, it may take some time finding the product that suits you best. But the most popular OTC ance treatment ingredient has been proven to be benzoyl peroxide. There is another popular ingredient that is used for drying out pimples, this is known as salicylic acid.

The next best thing to do, if you cannot find an OTC product that works for you, is to go to a doctor for advice. Doctor's are able to prescribe you with special pills, creams, gels or a combination of these.

TIP: Although it seems like a good idea at the time, squeezing or popping a pimple is not the best thing to do. It only aggravates the skin and causes it to get much worse. Squeezing pimples actually cause bacteria to be pushed right back into the skin which leads to redness and can causes permanent scarring.
